In this research, it was proposed to analyze the arguments and discourses that involve the regulation of digital platforms in Brazil, considering the conflicting relationship with the principle of freedom of expression. From the argumentative analysis of Ruth Amossy's discourse (AAD), the types of argument of Ingedore Koch and the characterizations on the controversy proposed by Marcelo Dascal, it was evaluated as the public debate has been around the issue. It was more specifically to investigate how the journalistic, legal and economic discourses operate in the context of the proposal and subsequent archive of Bill 2630/2020 in the House of Representatives, known as Fake News PEC. Corpus is made up of journalistic articles, official statements by the digital communication platforms and decisions of the Federal Supreme Court ministers who have expressed themselves on the attempted regulation and the operation of these platforms in the country.

The objective is to analyze scientific production on the use of Mobile Learning interfaces in multimodal learning practices through a narrative review of the literature. With an essentially qualitative approach, the research is characterized as exploratory. The analysis was carried out in the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) database, using peer-reviewed and complete texts published in the last 10 years (2015 to February 2025) as a filter. The searches included the keywords: “Mobile Learning,” “Multimodal Reading,” “E-Readers,” “Educational Technology,” “Educational Innovations,” “Mobile Learning,” and Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), covering research in Portuguese and English from scientific articles, books, book chapters, and experience reports. It contextualizes the concept of the “mobile subject,” the development of Mobile Learning practices, the impacts of digital ecosystems on education, and the benefits and challenges of using mobile interfaces in learning. As a result, trends, gaps, and paths for the development of new methodologies, pedagogical practices, and research on the topic are identified. It concludes that Mobile Learning is a powerful tool that can transform educational practices, promoting the ubiquity and flexibility of learning. It highlights the importance of careful Instructional Design and consideration of multimodality to optimize engagement and teaching effectiveness. The resolutions point to the need for more empirical research on the application of Mobile Learning in different contexts, as well as for the development of educational policies that encourage its conscious and effective use.

This research used the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) methodology to analyze the journalistic coverage of the Ukrainian War carried out by two Brazilian digital newspapers, Folha de São Paulo and Nexo Jornal. Using the three-dimensional discourse analysis proposed by Fairclough (2001), the analysis of the articles produced by the media in the seven days following the outbreak of the conflict was carried out, segmenting them into discursive, textual and social practice dimensions. In addition to CDA, the research was based on theories of language developed by various thinkers in the West and the East, as well as theories from the field of communication. When addressing the aspects of communication of interest to military doctrine, the works of Liang and Xiangsui (1999), Hoffman (2007) and Korybko (2015) were used. The genesis of journalistic activity in the West and its connections with the concept of citizenship were also explored. In order to discuss the results of the three-dimensional analysis, in addition to theorists from CDA and other social sciences, Charadeau's (2013) ideas regarding the discourse produced by media outlets were used. As a result of the research, a strong alignment was found between the discourse of Folha de São Paulo and Nexo Jornal with the hegemonic discourse produced by the main Western powers, notably the United States of America (USA). This alignment was identified through discursive and textual markers present in the corpus, and converges with the financial and institutional links of the news outlets with public and private organizations of Western powers, identified through their social practices. Based on a critical view of the power relations between the outlets and these powers, characteristic of CDA, a greater plurality of voices in Brazilian journalism is proposed from international multilateral institutions linked to the Global South, such as BRICS, aiming to achieve a truly civic and democratic communication environment

Entre a notícia e o ódio: jornalismo, reverberação acrítica e a legitimação simbólica do autoritarismo no Brasil
(Universidade Federal de Goiás, 2025-06-02) Ferreira, Abner Antônio; Freitas, Luiz Antônio Signates; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0464596762919932; Freitas, Luiz Antônio Signates; http://lattes.cnpq.br/0464596762919932; Moraes, Ângela Teixeira de; http://lattes.cnpq.br/5759623883813822; Fernandes, Luiz Carlos do Carmo; http://lattes.cnpq.br/4103630694756224
This dissertation critically analyzes the role of the Brazilian media in the symbolic legitimation of hate speech delivered by Jair Bolsonaro during the 2018 presidential campaign. Framed within the field of critical communication theory, the research is based on the hypothesis that, rather than ethically challenging authoritarian statements, the mainstream press operated as a vector of uncritical reverberation, reproducing violent rhetoric without the necessary ethical-normative filters, thus contributing to its normalization within the democratic public sphere. The main objective of the study is to examine how Brazilian journalism, in covering Bolsonaro's hate speech, symbolically reinforced his authoritarian rhetoric, thereby weakening the foundations of communicational citizenship. The topic is contextualized within the political and social landscape that led to Bolsonaro’s rise, marked by institutional crises, extreme polarization, and a media environment vulnerable to market and ideological pressures. The research demonstrates that journalism, despite its historical role as a critical mediator, abdicated its deliberative function at various moments, becoming a secondary actor in the symbolic legitimation of authoritarianism. The methodology adopted was qualitative, based on critical discourse analysis. The theoretical framework mobilizes classic and contemporary authors of critical communication theory, such as Pierre Bourdieu (1997), Jürgen Habermas (1984), Stuart Hall (2003), Gaye Tuchman (1978), Luiz Signates (2011; 2019), Cass Sunstein (2018), and Robert McChesney (2013). These authors provide the foundation for understanding journalism as a field traversed by symbolic disputes and ideological interests, as well as for analyzing media practices in contexts of political radicalization and democratic crisis. The dissertation concludes by confirming the initial hypothesis: Brazilian journalism, by privileging editorial strategies rooted in spectacularization, ritualized neutrality, and market logic, decisively contributed to the symbolic legitimation of Jair Bolsonaro's authoritarian discourse. The analyses demonstrate that the studied articles reinforced Bolsonaro’s image, downplayed the gravity of his statements, and silenced the voices of affected populations such as LGBTQIA+, women, Indigenous peoples, and other vulnerable groups. Therefore, the dissertation highlights the urgent need to reconfigure journalistic ethics and reaffirms the commitment of the academic field to critically examine the role of the media in defending democracy and communicational citizenship.

This study investigates how individuals with hearing or visual impairments access and interpret televised news content, taking into account both the communication barriers they face and the communicative strategies they develop. Grounded in the social model of disability, the research discusses the relevance of inclusive practices in media, assuming the perspective that full access to information is a fundamental right for the exercise of citizenship. To achieve this, in-depth interviews and participant observation were conducted, aiming to understand, in context, the experiences, perceptions, and resources that visually or hearing-impaired individuals mobilize when interacting with televised news. The theoretical framework is based on authors who address communicational citizenship, social responsibility in journalism, and television news studies, as well as research on accessibility and the history of people with disabilities. The methodological approaches propose a tension between functionalism, which emphasizes the integrative social functions of television, and Martín-Barbero, whose focus is on cultural mediation processes in media reception. The findings point to the need for adapted resources, such as sign language interpreters and audio description, and greater editorial attention to ensure the effective inclusion of people with sensory impairments in journalistic content. Thus, this dissertation contributes to discussions on the democratization of communication and offers reflections on broader practices in television news, capable of embracing society’s linguistic and sensory diversity.

This research aimed to detect the presence and analyze the real impact of the echo chamber on Brazilians in relation to the customized consumption of information during the COVID-19 pandemic, taking into account the political and affective polarization of a public health issue by media coverage. More specifically, assess the causes of this phenomenon and the extent to which it has impacted, or not, people's behavior in the face of the pandemic. Understand the true reach of echo chambers in a multimedia communication environment, combining online and offline channels in a transmedia process; checking, within the pandemic context, whether this phenomenon is being overestimated or not. The study maps and explores how far the power of traditional media and digital media goes in promoting echo chambers and how they have impacted, or not, on the behavior and attitudes of Brazilians, based on quantitative analysis of data from the research “Communication in combating COVID-19: Identification of informational inequalities in segments at risk”, coordinated by the Center for Research in Political Communication and Public Health (CPS) at the University of Brasília (UnB) in 2020. Our analyzes found findings of the presence of the echo chamber on a smaller scale than expected, being the phenomenon most easily identifiable in traditional media, especially TV, regardless of the ideological spectrum of the audience. Digital media has surprisingly had the opposite effect of taking people out of their echo chambers. We conclude that the customized consumption of information and the presence in the chambers reach more predisposed individuals who opt for traditional media, especially TV, that is, less educated people, with less interest in politics and follow the protestant religion. Therefore, group identities and affiliations proved to be more important than the ideological spectrum or partisanship in the choices of information sources. As for the impact on the behavior and attitudes of Brazilians, it was not significant according to our study, dismantling theories of media determinism and bubbles formed by digital media algorithms

This research started from the need to understand how K-pop is successful in the West even though it is a musical genre whose language, sound and visual production are unfamiliar. Seeking to discuss how the process of transnationalization of K-pop to the West occurs and how this genre becomes increasingly popular among the public and also among major brands. The guiding question is: How does the process of transnationalization and rise of K-pop occur in the West? In the search for this answer, Critical Narrative Analysis (MOTTA, 2013) is chosen as a methodological model in which the narrative is analyzed considering the communicational context, going beyond the classical approach. The Theory of Mediations (MARTÍN-BARBERO, 1997) is brought as an ally in cultural analysis, considering social practices, production and relationships established in the different spaces that K-pop occupies. Moving on to the analysis, it is therefore necessary to consider the context of K-pop, its structure, history and form of production and seek to understand in the text – musical and audiovisual production – what elements are present that promote this transnationalization. As an object of analysis, a production by the group BTS called Love Yourself was chosen, in which three video clips are used to understand how communication strategies that facilitate transnationality are applied in the text. The results show that transnationality is present through a narrative that relies on different communicative strategies present in the analyzed text, but also in the social and contemporary context of digital media, also considering the action of the armys in strengthening the transnationality of the works. As a conclusion, in K-pop there is always the use of transnational elements, whether visual, aesthetic or sound, that seek to both facilitate the understanding of the message transmitted and also make it easier for the public to consume. But these elements are understood in different ways according to the cultural context of each fan.

The research examines women's clothing fashion in Goiás from 1830, shortly after the Independence of Brazil - when the territory of the state of Goiás was elevated to the category of province - until the year 1900, in the 19th century. To do this, the content analysis method was used in conjunction with discourse analysis. The dissertation carries out a bibliographical survey on clothing fashion and the history of Goiás, making it possible to develop a detailed investigation of the approaches to advertisements and texts in nineteenth-century Goiás newspapers present in the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira. Thus, the researcher looked at the collection of 22 periodicals in the region, carrying out targeted searches using the terms “Fashion”, “Clothing”, “Attire”, “Clothes” e “Dress”. The analysis of the periodicals allowed the discovery of countless information about Goiás society in the 19th century and helped in understanding who Goiás women were, how they lived and how they were seen in the period. It was also possible to discover a large part of the materials, clothes and accessories used by these women. The study contributed to a better visibility of women in nineteenth-century society in the state of Goiás through the acts of clothing and social role played via content published in periodicals.

Public interest in Journalism is both part of professional culture and a deontological and theoretical value in studies on Journalism. This dissertation aims to understand the presence of public interest in the content of the news presented in the TV commercial “Leia Agora em O Popular”, as well as access through the QR Code. This quick response code is a strategy implemented with the aim of gaining readers for the printed and digital versions of the newspaper “O Popular”, founded in Goiás in 1938, and with a wide reach in the state and the Central-West region. This is a case study that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches. Theoretically, the relationship between journalism of business nature and public interest as a component of the social discourse that legitimizes Journalism is discussed, with a view to understanding this new commercial tool. It is also investigated whether the materials of public interest to be made available on the QR Code are present in the selection by the editors and reporters of “O Popular” and whether they are accessed by readers. It is concluded that, although the QR Code is an insignificant strategy for converting readers into subscribers, content of public interest is valued by the newspaper O Popular and also captures the interest of readers.

The dissertation analyzed journalistic discourses on sexual and gender diversity, focusing on the LGBTI+ community, as disseminated in the Northern Region of Brazil. The main premise of the research considers that issues related to sexual and gender dissidences are subject to stigmas and discriminatory prejudices. The news coverage of these topics is influenced by the reproduction of hegemonic heteronormative and cisnormative conceptions, as well as by structural binary formations in journalistic production. Media outlets, immersed in market competition and large-scale production, utilize web journalism as a means of disseminating information in real time. However, these publications often perpetuate ideas rooted in dominant ideological and symbolic orders. In this context, journalistic production contributes to the perpetuation of stereotypes, as the credibility of information transmitted by web newspapers is tied to the reproduction of meanings reflecting the regional context of each outlet. Thus, regional journalism portrays local events but often adopts approaches shaped by dominant notions, marginalizing content outside social norms and reinforcing prejudices about sexuality and gender identity. The research analyzed journalistic discourses about the LGBTI+ population published by eight g1 portals of Grupo Globo (g1 Acre, g1 Amapá, g1 Amazonas, g1 Pará, g1 Rondônia, g1 Roraima, g1 Santarém e Região, and g1 Tocantins), which cover the states in Brazil's Northern Region. Adopting a qualitative approach, the study employed a comparative method and triangulated data collection instruments through documentary research in the web newspapers' archives over a one-year period (2023–2024). It also conducted content analysis of the obtained data and in-depth interviews with journalists from these web newspapers. The findings reveal that publications on sexual and gender diversity vary across the portals, although they present similarities in certain events. These dynamics highlight the lack of critical reflections and investments in addressing these themes during the journalists' work routines.

For a long time, the dissemination of science to the general public has been studied with a focus on the sender, with a unidirectional approach to the message being sent. In contrast, authors such as Castelfranchi and Bueno proposed changes in science journalism, which mainly involved the area of the sociology of science. These changes highlighted the importance of integrating society into scientific production processes. Thus, this study sought to understand how the process of constructing the public communication of science occurs through the readership of Jornal UFG (a communication vehicle produced by the Secretariat of Communication (Secom) at the Federal University of Goiás). First, we listed some concepts already used to establish this interaction and advocated the use of the terminology "public communication of science” (PCS) in the development of our research. A bibliographic survey of these studies on PCS also helped us understand what characterizes this process. Next, we performed a content analysis of some articles in the Jornal, with the aim of finding elements of PCS. We then conducted empirical research to identify the profile of the vehicle's readership, using questionnaires, focus groups and interviews. Based on the samples collected from the target audience, we proposed possible contributions to increase the participation of the readership in the construction of public communication of science produced and disseminated by Jornal UFG.

With the digital context and, to some extent, considering all media as public goods, the expression of more voices is expected. This statement aligns with the rationale of this research, which is precisely to know what conditions are necessary for the inclusion of individuals in minority positions in communication, especially in local journalism. Previous studies by the author of this dissertation have already found restrictions on participation in local journalism (Vale; Melo, 2020; Vale; Ramos, 2020). This scenario pointed to media and information literacy (MIL) competencies, which in this work are linked to the principles and dialogues of Media and Information Literacy (MIL). It was assumed that social participation in the local communication environment was not yet a relevant factor, which brought up the central research question: what are the MIL competencies of individuals in minority positions in communication? To delineate the research, leaders from peripheral neighborhoods of Araguaína, Tocantins (TO), were selected to learn about their communication practices and assess their relationships with the local media and community. In this way, the lack of land regularization was highlighted as a catalyst for communication processes, with the low level of MIL competencies being a research hypothesis. As for the specific objectives, there were three: a) to outline the profile of the interviewees regarding media and information literacy; b) to understand the relationship of neighborhood leaders with the local media and community; c) to verify the role of the Consultative Council of Neighborhood Associations of Araguaína (CCABA) in promoting communication practices of neighborhood leaders. The research had a qualitative approach, in which in-depth interviews were used. The initial procedure of the research was the selection of two neighborhoods as the study locus: the Cimba sector, which has a small area whose owners or occupants have never had their land situation resolved with the public entity; and the Alto Bonito sector, which is undergoing a legal process of threat to repossession. The interviews were conducted with the presidents of the two mentioned neighborhoods and also with the president of CCABA. The female leadership in the positions in question reveals issues that have not gone unnoticed, but are not the focus of this study. Media and information literacy competencies were the analysis categories mobilized for the development of this dissertation, whose results showed the importance of some of them for the performance of a community leader, of which we highlight, as an example, the ability to ‘participate in social or political activities through networks or in person, in an informed way’. It was also noted that social engagement prior to neighborhood leadership contributed to the empowerment of the interviewees who most demonstrated MIL competencies. Another observation is that the participation of residents in collective projects promoted the "sense of belonging," essential for the formation of the community, and boosted communication, as seen in the fight for land regularization in the Alto Bonito sector. The results partially refute the initial hypothesis of a low level of MIL competencies, as they reveal particularities in the analyzed cases. Neighborhood presidents demobilize/limit their media and information literacy competencies due to factors such as the need for political articulation with public agents and concern with public exposure. The inferences of this dissertation on the role of CCABA in promoting communication practices of neighborhood leaders indicate that there is no inclination of the institution to promote this type of action, and it is perceived that the political relationship in the management of the council interferes with the recognition of media and information literacy competencies for effective democratic participation, highlighting the need to review the council's role.

This study aims to understand the relationship between violence in the media and the culture of convergence, according to Jenkins’ perspective and based on documentary records of the Richthofen Case. More specifically, it seeks to analyze this dynamic within the contemporary media ecosystem, particularly through bibliographic and documentary research. In this regard, we highlight how streaming has become increasingly central to the dissemination of criminal narratives, reinforcing consumption dynamics and interactions in an increasingly participatory media environment. The choice of the criminal case of Suzane von Richthofen, who was imprisoned in 2002 for her direct involvement in the murder of her parents in São Paulo, is particularly relevant due to the production of three films and a series through Amazon Prime, a streaming platform for audiovisual content. The case received extensive media coverage, thus involving the role of journalism and society’s continuous interest in the spectacularization of violence. It is possible to understand that media coverage persists as long as new actions are triggered or reinterpreted in new media formats, highlighting the interdependence between content production and audience engagement. This behavior becomes atypical when violent cases are involved, precisely due to the algorithmic and economic logic that sustains the high demand for such content. Finally, this study aims to promote a clear and open exchange of information within the academic community. Furthermore, expanding the discussion on the theory of convergence culture and its role in the creation and circulation of criminal narratives can contribute to new analytical approaches and critical reflections on the role of the media and communication professionals in shaping the collective imagination about crime.

This work investigates the effect of the new digital communication media in changing the behavior of the Brazilian population in relation to environmental and sustainability issues. In a context of growing awareness about the environmental transition and the search for sustainable practices, the media plays a key role in investigating and promoting public opinions and attitudes. In addition, it allows organizations to share information about sustainable practices and serves as a means for social movements to disseminate ideas and propose changes. The media is able to influence public attitudes, especially on environmental issues. However, there is still no conclusive evidence on the effects of the media on public opinion regarding the environment. The research seeks to explore how transformations in the media ecosystem can affect the attitudes, behaviors and opinions of the Brazilian population related to sustainability. A quantitative analysis of public opinion survey data was conducted to evaluate the potential impacts of digital media on public behavior change, with the aim to highlight the role of digital media in shaping Brazilians' attitudes and behaviors concerning environmental transition and development, thereby contributing to a broader understanding of the media's influence on pro-environmental awareness and actions within the country.

The objective of this research is to investigate the contribution of the Gabo Foundation to high-impact journalism through the journalism production grants awarded between 2020 and 2023. These grants are an economic incentive offered by this non-profit organization through competitions in which interested journalists apply for funding to develop high-impact reports. For this research, the case study method was used. Data collection included documentary research on the four grants awarded during this period: Solutions Journalism Grant (2020); Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism (2021); Fund for Investigative Journalism and New Narratives on Drugs (2022); and Collaborative Journalism Research Grants on Inclusive Recycling (2023). In addition, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with the four journalists who were awarded these grants (from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Bolivia) and with the Foundation's program director. The analysis of the collected data revealed that these grants are seen as an opportunity to develop more in-depth investigative journalism. Although impact is an important criterion required by the foundations, it is difficult to measure. However, the reports funded by the Gabo Foundation create the conditions to produce high-impact journalism and, most importantly, increase the professional satisfaction of the journalists involved.

This present work is a film analyzes of A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001) directed by Steven Spielberg, in order to understand how the film gender of science fiction updates the structure of the monomyth, as defined by Joseph Campbell (2007). For this reason, the study investigates the stylistic devices shown by the mise en scène and its levels of meaning. The film analyses are segmented into acts, allowing the film to raise its on questions. Additionally, the film’s narrative structure is analyzed bases on the concepts of Robert McKee (2018), taking into account the characterization and function of the protagonist, David, during the narrative. In parallel, the development of the character’s dramatic arc is also examined through the stages of the monomyth and its archetypes, as described by Jung (2023). Similarities were identified between the archetype of the divine child and the role that the protagonist fulfills with the narrative’s resolution. Framings of David underneath circular forms revels that the film’s stylistics choices follows the typical representations of this archetype, which is often associated with circular figures. The analysis of the stylistic elements also brought to attention the recurring presence of water throughout David’s journey, whose symbolic meaning is interpreted through Gaston Bachelard’s (2018) work. Through the analysis, the intertextuality within the film and within Spielberg’s work becomes evident. This is not only due to the film’s inspiration from Brian Aldiss short story Super toys Last All Summer Long (2001) but also due to how the narrative references the story of Pinocchio. Intertextuality is also manifested in the narrative conventions of the classical cinema and of the cinema of science fiction. The theme of creating an artificial intelligence capable of surpassing its creators is often shown in science fiction literature and cinema. Such cultural products points to the impact of new technologies on the field of cultural studies. Thus, this study seeks to understand how science fiction movies updates the structure of the monomyth to address contemporary themes and universal questions about humanity and the relationship between creator and creature on the field of artificial intelligence.

This study investigates the constitution and transformation of homosexual subjectivities in Brazil between 1980 and 2020 to question which truths and ways of being a homosexual man emerged in the 2010s in the Canal das Bee videos published on YouTube. To this end, Michel Foucault's ideas on power, subject, and truth are presented, in addition to post-structuralist discussions on communication and language. In view of these concepts, Foucault's genealogy is used, which divides the research into two methodological movements. First, the patriarchal and neoliberal gender origins that constituted a homonormative ideal in male homosexual practice between 1980 and 2010 are described based on the discussion on masculinity and transgenderism. Then, in the 2010s, the emergence of a regime of truth is described in which homosexuals are driven by Canal das Bee to question themselves about homonormative gendering. Based on these methodological movements, it is possible to say that Canal das Bee brings forth a homosexual who strategically uses essentialist and constructionist perspectives to free himself from violence and establish himself as a man who is no longer grounded in homonormative ideals, but in a universe of possibilities previously limited to women. Through this displacement of male homosexuality, the channel encourages care for others, since a selfish and solitary experience does not match the collective need imposed today by social and political movements. In this way, the research highlights the importance of understanding the articulations, promotions and pedagogizations about gender and sexuality that are conveyed, and how these practices influence the subjectivation of individuals
