dc.description.abstractPioneer Missionary Medicine and the Role of the Evangelical Union of South American (UESA) in Goiás, in the first half of the 20th century is the result of an accurate research work that sought to elucidate relevant questions about the relevance of Pioneer Missionary Medicine and its impact in Goiás in the period under review. Thus, the work that the reader has at hand, consists of a theoretical and methodological path that runs through the process of the history of medicine in Goiás from its beginnings to the mid-twentieth century. Unlike some studies in the field of health and disease history focused on capitals and coastal cities, or even studies from the hinterland, this work focuses on the values that make up a specific ethos based on comprehensive Weberian sociology and history. From this theoretical perspective, it was possible to build its own typology, relying on the experience of health agents involved in scientific medicine and motivated by the Protestant Christian faith from the Evangelical Union of South American (UESA). Throughout the development of the research, we followed some paths. First, we investigated the lives of 19th century medical missionaries in different regions of the world, marked by the lack of care in the area of health and education, among other essential aspects for the social development of local communities. The key question in this context is: how and what were the central characters in shaping the ethos of pioneer missionary medicine? We defend the premise that their actions were based on spirituality and how it has stimulated action in regions considered inhospitable. Second, we will investigate the health situation in Goiás from its origin until the arrival of UESA members in 1911, looking at the establishment of hospitals, leprosariums, health facilities and the permanence of licensed doctors. We defend the argument that the precarious and complex situation of public health in Goiás was the ideal environment for the performance of health agents with the ethos of pioneer missionary medicine. We will try to show how Scotland was the radiating center of scientific medicine, the role of the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910, its positions on medicine applied to missions and its view on Latin America. The research also shows that the city of Anápolis, Goiás, was a kind of radiating center for Pioneer Missionary Medicine in Brazil. Health agents and institutions created by them made it possible for the city to become a reference in scientific medicine, with a multiplication of actions in Goiás, especially starting from 1920’s to 1943, an essential period in this investigation, based on extensive research carried out at the Center for the Study of World Christianity, from the University of Edinburgh.eng

dc.description.resumoA Medicina Missionária Pioneira e o Papel da União Evangélica Sul-Americana (UESA) em Goiás, na Primeira metade do Século XX é resultado de um acurado trabalho de pesquisa que buscou elucidar questões balizadoras sobre a relevância da Medicina Missionária Pioneira e seu impacto em Goiás no período em apreço. Assim, o trabalho que o leitor tem em mãos, consta de um percurso teórico e metodológico que percorre o processo da história da medicina em Goiás desde os seus primórdios até meados do século XX. Diferente de alguns estudos do campo da história da saúde e das doenças focados nas capitais e cidades litorâneas, ou ainda nos estudos a partir do sertão, este trabalho concentra-se nos valores que compõem um ethos específico fundamentados na sociologia weberiana compreensiva e na história. A partir dessa vertente teórica foi possível construir uma tipologia própria, contando com a experiência de agentes de saúde envolvidos na medicina científica e motivados pela fé cristã protestante a partir da União Evangélica Sul-Americana. Ao longo do desenvolvimento da pesquisa, percorremos alguns caminhos. Em primeiro lugar, investigamos a vida de médicos missionários do século XIX em diferentes regiões do mundo, marcadas pela ausência de cuidados na área da saúde e educação, dentre outros quesitos imprescindíveis para o desenvolvimento social das comunidades locais. A pergunta-chave nesse contexto é: como e quais foram os personagens centrais na formação do ethos da medicina missionária pioneira? Defendemos a premissa de que suas ações foram fundamentadas na espiritualidade e como esta impulsionou um agir em regiões consideradas inóspitas. Em segundo lugar, pesquisaremos a situação sanitária de Goiás desde sua origem até a chegada dos membros da UESA, em 1911, atentando para o estabelecimento de hospitais, leprosários, espaços de saúde e permanência dos médicos licenciados. Defendemos o argumento de que a precária e complexa situação da saúde pública em Goiás foi o ambiente ideal para a atuação dos agentes de saúde com o ethos da medicina missionária pioneira. Procuraremos mostrar como a Escócia foi o centro irradiador da medicina científica, a função da Conferência Missionária Mundial em Edimburgo em 1910, seus posicionamentos sobre a medicina aplicada às missões e sua visão sobre a América Latina. A pesquisa evidencia, também, que a cidade de Anápolis, Goiás, foi uma espécie de centro irradiador da Medicina Missionária Pioneira no Brasil. Os agentes de saúde e instituições por eles criadas possibilitaram a cidade tornar-se a referência na medicina científica, com multiplicação de ações em Goiás, especialmente a partir da década de 1920 até 1943 período essencial nessa investigação embasada na pesquisa realizada no Centro de Estudos do Cristianismo Mundial, da Universidade de Edimburgo.pt_BR
