Resumo

Malignant tumors in the orbital cavity often require surgical treatment, however, few studies recording the prevalence of tumors in the orbit and post-surgical rehabilitation through maxillofacial prosthetics. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of malignant tumors in the orbital cavity, employed as the surgical treatment and prosthetic rehabilitation after surgery. A retrospective convenience sample was selected from 269 charts of patients treated at Hospital Araújo Jorge (Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil), regional referral center for cancer treatment and supported by the National Health System, from 1998 to 2009. Data concerning the clinical and pathological, psychological support, rehabilitation, prosthetics and clinical outcome were investigated. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that the age group ranged from 1 to 92 years, mean 43.5 years, 50.2% of female patients. Tumors were more prevalent basal cell carcinoma (58%), retinoblastoma (17.1%), squamous cell carcinoma of the conjunctiva (7.1%), malignant melanoma (6.7%) and rhabdomyosarcoma (4.5%). Of the total, 250 patients (92.3%) underwent surgery by exenteration (78%) or enucleation (21.6%). Variables associated with the rehabilitation aesthetic eye were age (p <0.001) and type of surgery (p <0.001). It follows then that there are low rates of prosthetic care and psychological care offered to patients and that the process was influenced by the esthetic rehabilitative patient's young age and in cases of surgical enucleation of the eyeball
