dc.description.abstractThis study investigates the symbols present in two tales from Edgar Allan Poe’s book Histórias extraordinárias (2010), and how they signal the mechanism of escape from death, as well as the fear of the passage of time. The tales The Mask of Death Red and The Pit and the Pendulum, which transmit the proposed theme in a rich and clear way, were chosen for the realization of this research. The situations and characters of the stories help us to better understand the theme of death and how it is developed in the individual and social imaginary, being always subject to additions of new symbols given that the imaginary is not alien to its surroundings and its updates. In this sense, this study sheds light on how literature makes it possible to overcome images of reality, amplifying singular and subjective perceptions, creating new senses and amplifying the real. As a theoretical basis, the studies of Gilbert Durand (2012) and his theory of the imaginary will be called, especially his concept of daytime image regime. In addition to studies on symbolic and death in authors such as Jean Delumeau (2009), Jean Chevalier (2001), Philippe Aries (2000) among others.eng

dc.description.resumoEste estudo investiga os símbolos presentes em dois contos do livro Histórias extraordinárias (2010), de Edgar Allan Poe, e como eles sinalizam o mecanismo de fuga da morte, bem como o medo da passagem do tempo. Para a realização desde trabalho foram escolhidos como corpus desta pesquisa os contos A Máscara da Morte Rubra e O Poço e o Pêndulo que transmitem de forma rica e clara o tema proposto. As situações e personagens dos contos nos ajudam a entender melhor o tema da morte e como ele é desenvolvido no imaginário individual e social, estando sempre sujeitos a adições de novos símbolos tendo em vista que o imaginário não está alheio ao seu entorno e suas atualizações. Neste sentido, este estudo lança luz sobre de que forma a literatura possibilita ultrapassar as imagens da realidade, ampliando as percepções singulares e subjetivas, criando novos sentidos e amplificando o real. Como fundamentação teórica foram convocados os estudos de Gilbert Durand (2012) e sua teoria do imaginário, sobretudo seu conceito de regime diurno das imagens. Além de estudos sobre o simbólico e a morte em autores como Jean Delumeau (2009), Jean Chevalier (2001), Philippe Áries (2000) entre outros.
