Resumo

This dissertation investigates the work of the playwright Jorge Andrade (1922–1984), with an emphasis on the analysis of the cycle Marta, the Tree and the Clock, a dramaturgical set composed of ten plays written between 1951 and 1969. This cycle constitutes the central focus of the research, which seeks to understand how Andrade weaves together, within it, the historical, theoretical, and aesthetic questions that profoundly shaped his production. Drawing on a close examination of the plays, the dissertation analyzes the historical influences that permeate the cycle—especially the formation of São Paulo shaped by agrarian conflicts, the tensions between tradition and modernity, and the crisis of the coffee-growing elites. It also investigates the stylistic choices and narrative strategies employed by the playwright, with particular attention to the ways in which he articulates past, present, and future.
