Abstract

This This thesis addresses, in an integrated and analytical manner, beekeeping in the state of Goiás, focusing on the Local Productive Arrangement (LPA) of the Vale do Rio dos Bois. It is an applied research study, whose relevance lies in the need to identify public policies for beekeeping in the state of Goiás, based on an analysis of the Beekeeping LPA of the Vale do Rio dos Bois. Beekeeping, as a strategic activity for environmental conservation, productive diversification, and income generation in rural areas, has gained prominence in recent public policies, especially following the establishment of the LPA in 2018 and the publication of calls for proposals aimed at research and innovation to strengthen it. The objective of this thesis is to understand the progress, challenges, and actions implemented by the State to promote the territorial, productive, and sustainable development of this sector. The thesis is structured as a compilation of scientific articles, each contributing to a deeper understanding of the different dimensions involved in beekeeping in the state. The first article aims to present the state of the art of research, using an interdisciplinary approach. The second article seeks to investigate the bottlenecks faced by producers, with an emphasis on the sustainability of the activity and the pressures exerted by other productive chains. The third article discusses public policies and current regulatory frameworks, aiming to evaluate the role of the State as a promoter of sustainable strategies for the sector. The fourth article analyzes the municipalities within the LPA from spatial and socioeconomic perspectives, relating natural characteristics to beekeeping performance. The fifth article presents the development of a multiplatform communication system between farmers and beekeepers, aiming to mitigate the impacts of pesticide spraying on colonies by integrating technologies such as georeferencing and automated notifications. The relevance of this research lies in its potential to support more effective public policies aligned with the demands of the beekeeping sector in Goiás. Given the state's low participation in national rankings for honey production (0.6%) and exports (0.0002%), there is a clear urgency for strategies that promote the sector while respecting its specificities and potential. Thus, the importance of future studies is highlighted, particularly those aimed at evaluating the real impact of implemented policies, in order to propose more integrated, participatory, and sustainability-oriented actions, in line with the principles of territorial development.
