Resumo

This undergraduate thesis aims to analyze how the concepts of the Camp movement relate to expressions of sapphic drag queen art, and how this aesthetic sensibility influences and transforms traditional views of femininity in contemporary society. Through a literature review focused on costume design as a form of identity construction, this research seeks to understand Camp aesthetics as a tool for performativity and for breaking pre-established gender norms, as well as the importance of sapphic drag artists within this non-normative artistic expression. The thesis highlights Susan Sontag’s 20th century concept of Camp and concentrates on examining its implications in the 21st century, a period marked by the rise of the drag scene and queer aesthetics in both national and international fashion and media. Although these references are vast and enrich the understanding of this cultural phenomenon, this study aims to give greater visibility to drag art and drag artists, particularly queer women, and to investigate how the body, used as a canvas for flamboyant clothing and exaggerated makeup, creates a visually radical and culturally subversive language, while also bringing into question notions of fabricated femininity.
