Modernidade encomendada: a inversão da kunstwollen como projeto político na construção de Goiânia

Abstract

This paper investigates the founding of Goiânia through the concept of Kunstwollen (will to form) as developed by Wilhelm Worringer in Abstraktion und Einfühlung (1908). In its original formulation, the will to form emerges organically from the sedimentation of layers of significance, mental habits and the historical moment, which together generate a certain relationship between man and that world. The present study proposes that the political project of the Vargas Era, in building Goiânia, did so according to a new will to form, commissioning an exogenous modernity that would enact a structural inversion of the Worringerian concept. The rationalist urban plan of Attílio Corrêa Lima, the Art Déco language of institutional buildings, and the land-use regulations operated not as expressions of a collective will rooted in a community of shared significance, but as instruments of a spatial pedagogy of power that meant to retroactively manufacture the modern man the regime sought to forge
