Resumo

This study investigates the corset as a symbolic element in the construction and contestation of representations of femininity in contemporary fashion. Grounded in the understanding of fashion as a system of nonverbal communication, capable of expressing identities and sociocultural values, the research examines clothing as a language whose meanings are historically constructed and continuously re-signified. Within this context, corsetry, traditionally associated with intimacy, sexuality, and the regulation of the female body, is analyzed through its transition into the public sphere and its incorporation into outerwear, a process intensified throughout the 20th century with the development of youth cultures and countercultural movements. Based on a bibliographical review, the study brings together contributions from the sociology of fashion, philosophy and cultural and feminist theories, while also incorporating reflections on the body, power dynamics and gender construction. In doing so, the research seeks to understand how the appropriation and re-signification of this garment operate as an aesthetic and political language, articulating tensions between normativity and subversion. Thus, the study proposes an analysis of the corset not merely as an item of clothing, but as a symbolic device capable of mediating disputes related to identity, the body, and the social construction of gender.
