Item A estatuária funerária no Brasil: um olhar indagador sobre as imagens de Jesus Cristo nos cemitérios brasileiros(2017) Borges, Maria Elizia; Carneiro, MaristelaAbstract: This article intends to analyze the artistic depictions of Jesus Christ found in cemeteries of brazilian small towns and cities, discussing their role as a devotional iconography. Cemeteries are spaces of great artistic, symbolic and religious elaboration, capable of expressing a great deal about the societies that produced them. Our analysis consists of considerations about the configuration of secularized cemeteries in Brazil and a discussion on the thematic possibilities of images of Christ in the art world. From these considerations, we look upon devotional images of Christ in the cemeteries we researched, assessing how these approach traditional models of depictions of Christ.Item Arte funerária no Brasil: uma pesquisa peculiar no campo das artes visuais(2013) Borges, Maria EliziaThe text addresses the circumscription of the research on funerary art in Brazil because it is a material artifact of great significance for the history of art and cultural history. It displays the revision of a basic principle to work with funeral works in secular cemeteries: the identification of artistic styles, cultural identities and records of memories.Item Representações da arte funerária: homenagem às pessoas que contribuíram para educação no Brasil(2019) Borges, Maria EliziaThis article aims to make a visual reading of funerary monuments that honor the classroom, the teachers and the benefactors who collaborated for the Brazilian teaching. A chronological historicism of the passages that led man to become this special being - educator of the social group to which he belongs – was followed. The appearance of the word, the writing, the office of the clerk and the bookseller, the teacher, the classroom, and members of society complement each other to build this framework that deserves the intellectual formation of man originated from instruction and knowledge. The sculptures are represented in the format of memorial portraits, busts, herms, whole bodies and using narratives that value the biographical universe of the honored characters. To reconstruct the memory context of people, I had as support concepts from the History of Education and the History of Art. Field research carried out in the various secularized cemeteries in Brazil was fundamental to the realization of this work. This individual memory has become public and accessible to all who visit the cemetery.Item Retratos memoriais: nascimento/morte da linhagem familiar burguesa(2012-08) Borges, Maria Elizia; Oliveira, Julliana Rodrigues deThis article addresses some aspects of portraits in funerary monuments installed in perpetual cemeteries in Brazil, from the nineteenth and twentieth century’s, a period that began the custom of decorating the tombs with the bust of the deceased. Gradually pictures in porcelain occupied this representational function in smaller graves.This is a particular type of material that belongs the ornaments funerary construction.The genre of the memorial portrait here is assigned to the iconographic analysis, and is restricted to one type of artistic production:busts and photographs depicting the couple, one symbolic representation of birth and perpetuation of the bourgeois nuclear family. The various poses meet the functions of preserving the memory of deceased, and to satisfy the desires of their descendants eternalize them for the community. One can also identify the costumes of the Brazilian family towards death, through the use of these unique ornaments.
