Item Condições visuais autorrelatadas e quedas em idosos institucionalizados(2012-02) Menezes, Ruth Losada de; Bachion, Maria MárciaOBJECTIVE: To evaluate the visual conditions self-reported by institutionalized elderly and their relation to accidental falls. METHODS: Prospective study in which we interviewed 59 elderly residents of long-stay institutions for elderly in Goiânia, between 2005 and 2007. Two surveys were conducted with an interval of two years to perform the assessments proposed. The visual conditions in the first survey and the report of falls in the wake were self-reported. The elderly were classified according to the presence of visual impairment and compared the occurrence of fall with the Fisher exact test. RESULTS: Visual deficit was reported by 48 (81.4%) of the elderly and accidents from falls reached 32 (54.2%) of them; which were more prevalent among older adults with visual impairment. After the first inquiry, in the following two years, found no statistically significant difference (p = 0.171) between the variable self-reported visual impairment and falls. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate the need for better research ophthalmology clinic for the elderly. Early diagnosis of visual impairment and / or correct it can benefit the elderly and to avoid future functional impairment arising from these and consequences such as falls.Item Exercício físico para prevenção de quedas: ensaio clínico com idosos institucionalizados em Goiânia, Brasil(2012) Sá, Ana Claudia Antonio Maranhão; Bachion, Maria Márcia; Menezes, Ruth Losada deThe scope of this study was to evaluate an intervention program with group physical exercises to prevent falls in the elderly in longterm care institutions. This is a non-randomized clinical trial conducted with 20 institutionalized elderly people in the city of Goiânia in Brazil. The interventions occurred over the period of five months, though the proposed exercise program was based on earlier studies. Standardized measures were used to assess falls, balance and gait, muscle strength, flexibility and fear of falling. After the period of 12 months from the start of intervention there was a significant reduction in the number of falls (p = 0.046). Based on the program, significant differences were observed for point allocation of the maneuvers of balance (p = 0.001), total scores of the maneuvers of balance and gait (p = 0.007), muscle strength of hand grip (p = 0.001) and of lower limbs (p < 0.001), flexibility of movement of shoulder flexion (p = 0.001). The intervention using an exercise program proved to be adequate, albeit insufficient to improve the gait, multiple joint flexibility of the spine and hip and fear of falling, or to reduce the number of elderly people who suffered falls from the beginning of the study.Item Ocorrência de quedas em idosos não institucionalizados: revisão sistemática da literatura(2013) Sandoval, Renato Alves; Sá, Ana Cláudia Antônio Maranhão; Menezes, Ruth Losada de; Nakatani, Adélia Yaeko Kyosen; Bachion, Maria MárciaThis systematic literature review aimed to identify the occurrence of falls in elderly living in the community. On CAPES website, a search was conducted on the following databases: Academic Search (EBSCO), SciELO, and Science Direct (ELSEVIER). An additional search, on the EFDEPORTES website, was performed on the Lecturas Educación Física y Deportes database. Using the chosen descriptors, 247 articles published from 2000 to 2011 were identified. A total of 230 articles were excluded as they did not meet all the inclusion criteria. Hence, 17 articles were included in the study, 12 of which were cross-sectional studies, two prospective studies, two population studies, and one retrospective study. The whole sample involved in the studies consisted of 114,911 subjects with an average age of 70 years, distributed across seven countries: Brazil, United States, Spain, Italy, Nigeria, Turkey and China. The occurrence of falls ranged between 15.9% and 56.3%, with a median of 28.50%. Although presenting variation, the occurrence of falls in elderly living in the community is still high.Item A vulnerabilidade do idoso para as quedas: análise dos incidentes críticos(Marcelo Medeiros, 2007-04) Silva, Tatiana Magalhães; Nakatani, Adélia Yaeko Kyosen; Souza, Adenícia Custódia Silva e; Lima, Maria do Carmo SilvaExploratory and descriptive study that aims to characterize the situations of falls in aged people in a community of Programa de Saúde da Família (PSF) from Goiânia. The informations were collected by interview, using the technique of critical incident, and analyzed by qualitative form, also according to the technique and to the elements which characterize the critical incident: situation, behavior and consequence. There were 20 eldery between 60 and 86 years old, who had participated of the study. The fall situations occurred more frequently (70%) at domiciliary circles, demonstrating the vulnerability of the aged in the domicile. The most frequent behaviors were about independence for the self care, represented by the popular knowledge practices. Pain, wound and alterations in physical mobility prevailed as consequences of that. The results infotmations reveal the levels of critical requirement necessary to establish planning of action to prevent the falls in the aged people. It is up to the Family Health Team to evaluate ways to intervene in the community from the knowledge of this reality in order to reduce this event of significant proportion in aged population.
