Resumo
The main objective of this study was to examine the skills of librarian-managers for their
effective action towards the demands of the labor market in university libraries of Goiânia.
Thus, a literature review regarding essential competences, university libraries,
professional librarians, librarian-manager and the labor market, to enabled this research was
made. The methodology of the adopted research consisted of quantitative method for the
measurement of closed questions that allowed to know the job profile, the level of basic
skills of librarian-managers, and what essential competences required by the labor
market; and used the qualitative method for analysis of the open questions, which
allowed a closer look at core competencies in the universe of activity from Goiânia university
libraries. The study was conducted with 13 managers and librarians 3 employers and the
questionnaire were used as the tool for data collection. It is concluded from the results that the
essential competences demanded by the labor market for university libraries in Goiânia are
formed by the integration of abilities, collective learning, technology and
knowledge. Moreover, the results of this research aims to contribute to the librarianmanagers
of university libraries in Goiânia, for all other librarians who wish to develop basic
competences and the institutions and/or organizations that are looking for qualified
professionals in the field of librarianship.
