The text aims at reflecting on testimonies of people who have had abortions, highlighting the potentials and ambiguities of the political proposal marked by the statement “I had an abortion” The analysis focuses on materials that have already undergone a process of public mediation, with an emphasis on audiovisual productions featuring testimonies of illegal — or clandestine — abortion. The methodology adopted is based on sociological film analysis, emphasizing that the study of visual and sound elements makes it possible to observe the paradoxes, tensions, and fissures of social processes. To this end, the text analyzes two films produced in close periods and sharing the same title: Clandestinas, a Brazilian documentary directed by Fadhia Salomão and released in 2014, and Clandestinas, an Argentine documentary directed by Andrea Aguilar and Ezequiel Altamirano and released two years earlier, in 2012. Finally, the text concludes that the integration of external and internal elements of both films reveals markedly different developments between them, which are in dialogue with the social struggles and contradictions of their respective countries.
