Resumo
This article aims to analyze how the language policies in Brazil are ideologically saturated by beliefs in monolingualism and language standardization. To this end we discuss the conceptualizations of Language Ideologies (WOORLARD, 1998; KROSKRITY, 2000, 2004; IRVINE; GAL, 2000), demonstrating that language is not simply an instrument for ideological processes, in reality it is constituted by through these ideological processes, which permeate social, cultural issues, such as power relations and social hierarchies. Subsequently, we discuss some definitions of language policies (SCHIFFMAN, 1996, SOLPSKY, 2004; WILEY, 2002), demonstrating how they can be conceived as ideological constructs that reflect and (re) produce power relations within society. Finally, we analyze how throughout history, linguistic politics in Brazil has been entangled by the ideal of a homogeneous and hegemonic national language, an ideal that prevails to this day and that is widely accepted and rooted in society.
