Resumo
This monograph is a bibliographical and documentary research that has as its theme
school punishment. The historical course of school punishment from the inauguration of formal
education in Brazil to the present day was analyzed in order to examine how society and the State
have changed their understanding of this theme over the centuries. The problem that drove this
research was the search to determine whether school punishment is a practice that has already
been overcome today, or whether it still exists but only had its form modified. To this end,
theoretical works were used, such as field research, scientific articles and books to analyze an
academic production and the conceptions of the historical and pedagogical field on the subject,
as well as laws, guidelines and educational documents that represent the vision of the State
about the school punishment in each season. The conclusion, from the study, was that with the
Federal Constitution, the Law of Guidelines and Bases of Education, the Child and Adolescent
Statute, and especially the Menino Bernardo Law, the current moment has represented a great
advance in terms of social and legal condemnation of school punishment, but it is still an existing
practice in everyday school life, and has not, therefore, been completely overcome. This research
is relevant to the educational field, as it constitutes an unusual historical overview, since it covers
all of Brazilian education, but it does not come close to the exhaustion of this theme, which
should be more broadly analyzed from the psychological perspective, and more deeply from the
perspective of the law.
