Objectives: To analyze the epidemiological and serological data from pre-natal examinations from pregnant women with high
risk to TORCH group infection, and to detect the presence of Toxoplasma gondii through the histopathological and PCR analysis
of the placentas from pregnant women with positive serology to toxoplasmosis. Methodology: 32 pregnant women triaged from the Gynecology Service of the Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Goias
participated in this study. From them we collected blood and placenta which were examined by serological, anatomopathological
and molecular techniques.
Results: the pregnant women had an average age of 26.5 years, low education, without personal income. The toxoplasmosis
seropositivity was of 78.1%, 9.4% to cytomegalovirus, 9.4% to syphilis and 3.1% to rubeola. The relation between the placentary
weight with the stage of pregnancy demonstrated that 43.7% were with low weight and 28.1% were with high weight.
The anatomopathological examination go the placentas showed signs of infection in 15.6% of the cases. The PCR detected
Toxoplasma gondii DNA in 60% of the placentas.
Conclusion: the studied group has low income and education. The histopatholgical and molecular analysis of the placentas aiming
the Toxoplasma gondii detection showed that the PCR technique is more sensitive than the anatomopathological analysis of the
placentary tissue. The epidemiological and serological data are essential to the implantation of pregnant women health programmes.
