Higher training courses for translators and interpreters of Brazilian Sign Language
(Libras) - Portuguese are recent in Brazilian universities. However, the demands for these
professionals are growing more and more in society, especially after the laws and decrees
that govern Libras are in force, outline guidelines for the provision of higher education
courses and regulate the profession of translator and Libras-Portuguese interpreter. The
present article takes as its object of study a sample of professors who work in higher
education courses aimed at training Libras-Portuguese translators and interpreters, with the
aim of understanding the academic profile of these trainers. The research carried out adopts
an exploratory approach, which combines the use of quantitative data with qualitative
analyzes. Data collection was carried out by analyzing the curricula available on the Lattes
Platform, covering teachers from three universities in the Southeastern Region of Brazil. The
results are presented in the form of frames and the analyzes show that many of these teachers
do not have specific training to work in the process of training Libras translators and
interpreters and, still, less than half have practical market experience. The research is
expected to contribute to the debates and formulation of management policies of higher
education institutions, in order to privilege the qualification of trainers for Libras-Portuguese
translator and interpreter courses, since their performance impacts the students and
interferes with your future professional performance.
