The realization of open construction sites allows the participation of local groups in the construction, restoration, requalification or reconstruction processes of a given property. It is characterized as a heritage education practice, but its benefits unfold when dealing with interventions in places of sensitive memories, succumbed by traumatic events. In this article, we propose the reflection of the open construction site as a space for mourning in sensitive situations, having as object of study the Matrix of Pirenópolis, set on fire in 2002. We will discuss the dynamics adopted by the construction site in that context and how the active participation of the inhabitants in the restoration works contributed to the mourning process and the redefinition of heritage. Therefore, the notion of space together with that of place will allow us to perceive the environment as a repository of intrinsic and extrinsic values, attributed by the community that holds the property, through processes of resemantization and resignification, dialogically constructed by conflicts around memory.
