Resumo
This article aims at reflecting on some representations about the native speaker of English and the non-native speaker so that we can realize the discourse practices of a teacher of English and his students, which reveal their perceptions upon this dichotomy. Based on the features of an ethnographic research, we could observe that three learners showed themselves aware of their legitimacy as speakers of English. However, it is still possible to notice among the participants under investigation the perception which implies that the native speaker of English is superior. Thus, the teacher and students’ discourse practices point to the urgency in discussing and questioning this dichotomy in the English language classroom in order to clarify who the owner of the English language is.
