Resumo
This article discusses some high school students’ representations on speech
genre reading practices in Portuguese language classes from a public school in the city of
Goiania. In this study, representations are understood as a means of interpreting and thinking
reality through discourses, being constructed over time by language, subject and society
mediation and permeated by power relations. Data were extracted from questionnaires and
individual semi-structured interviews. The reflections about the studied context occurred from
a qualitative case study. In data analysis, the concepts of representation (SILVA, 2001a,
2001b, 2010), discussions on speech genres (BAKHTIN, 2003) and literary literacy (OCEMLIT, BRAZIL, 2006) are taken into consideration. The results point to the representation that
speech genre reading in Portuguese language classes is a knowledge source that contributes
to improving textual writing processes, so that students can take Enem writing tests, the
Brazilian university entrance examination, and be successful. On the other hand, we noticed, from analyzed data, signs of aesthetic enjoyment when students really engage in reading a
literary work.
