Discussing reading, reading in a foreign language, and above all, reading of literay texts with the objective of developing language, having as theoretical support Bakhtin (2011), Chartier (1990, 1994, 1996, 2002), Eco (1986), Leffa (1996, 1999), Manguel (1997), Orlandi (2009), Wolf and Barzilai (2009), among others, this study has as a main goal to investigate what level of difficulty a literary text in Portuguese provokes in the meaning formation of two Spanish speaker readers Who are beginners in the target language. Thus, this research aims at responding the following question: what difficulties did the students have to make sense to a Machado de Assis short story in Portuguese? This study is characterized as a case study (JOHNSON, 1992), viewing that it focus on a specific event where the researcher concentrates his attention in a single problem. This is aqualitative research –case study. To generate the data, it was used an initial questionnaire, audio recording, shooting and we also collected the short story review the students produced. By reading a Machado de Assis short story, the participants of this study; two foreign students beginners in Portuguese were beyond the intelligible. Even though they have faced some small difficulties in relation to the vocabulary and also there has been some mother tongue interference, which showed they are not proficient in Portuguese yet concerning to speaking and writing, the students were able to understand the short story proposed.
