Resumo
This experiment was developed at Racecourse of
the Pond of Jockey Club of Goiás, in order to evaluate the
levels of cortisol, T3, T4 and glucose as stress indicatives
in thoroughbred racehorses, before and after the
competition. 25 males, aging between 29 and 60 months
and weighing from 400 to 490 kg were tested. The first
blood sample was collected in the stable, in the
morning(M1). The second one, at 3:00 p.m, in the
paddock(M2), before the moment of the accomplishment
of the first race, and the third one, in the paddock
immediately after finishing the first race(M3). The heart
frequency, the respiratory rate and rectal temperature, were
recorded in the same moments before the blood colection,
and the environmental variables were registered in the
moments that the blood had been drawn. The largest
variation (P <0,01) of the cortisol levels occurred between
M1 and M2, and there was correlation with the temperature
of the air and relative humidity (r=0,45). About thyroid
hormones, only T3 was affected by day(P <0,01),and occurred
interaction moment x day (P <0,05), decreasing its
concentration of the moment M2 to the moment M3. Glucose
concentrations varied significantly (P <0,01) due to moments,
and an interaction moment x day. The heart frequency,
respiratory rate and rectal temperature had significant
variations (P <0,01) due to the moments of the observations.
In this experiment, it was possible to conclude that animals
presented high cortisol levels and high values of physiologic
characteristics, suggesting stress in the moments before
and immediately after the competition.
