Resumo

In this paper, I analyze the impacting changes of migration flows to Brazil in the linguistic ideologies decisions current in the decisions recorded on the minutes of the National Immigration Council (CNIg) and I also discuss the consequences of these changes for national identity hierarchies. The analysis is based on contemporary studies on language ideologies and processes of linguistic differentiation. The main question is: how language ideologies intersect with categories of difference in discussions and consequent referrals about migration at an institution representative of the Brazilian state? To answer this question, the analysis is organized into two sets: the conceptions of language(s) and the regulations of language resources. The results show that, since 2006, the intersections between identity categories and language ideologies have become more complex, contradictory and hierarchized. The circulation of two contradictory language ideologies – Brazilian monolingualism and English as a lingua franca – hierarchizes perversely groups marked by categories of national differences in the definition of conditions of access and permanence in Brazilian territory.
