Resumo

The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of enteroparasites in dogs and to compare different diagnostic techniques. Four hundred and thirty four feacal samples from dogs in the municipality of Goiânia (Goiás) were collected from august 2001 to march 2002, of which 384 (88.5%) were from domiciliated dogs and 50 (11.5%) from homeless dogs. It was performed a comparative study between centrifugal flotation with sugar saturated solution (Sheather) and flotation with zinc sulfate (Faust) techniques in 150 feacal samples from domiciliated dogs. The technique using Sheather’s solution was significantly superior to Faust’s method for the diagnosis of eggs, cysts and oocysts of intestinal parasites. Based on those findings the other samples were analyzed by the centrifugal flotation with Sheather’s solution and modified Ziehl-Neelsen techniques. From a total of 434 examined samples, 94 (21.65%) were positive for one or more enteroparasites, of which 21 (42%) from homeless dogs and 73 (19%) from domiciliated dogs. The most frequent parasites found in homeless dogs were Ancylostoma (22%), Isospora spp (10%), Cryptosporidium parvum (6%) and Toxocara canis (4%). Among domiciliated dogs it was found Ancylostoma (9.9%), Isospora spp (2.6%), T. canis (2.34%), C. parvum (2.08%), Giardia sp (1.6%), Sarcocystis sp (0.26%) and Dipylidium caninum (0.26%). It was observed association between T. canis and C. parvum (4%); Isospora spp and C. parvum (4%), in homeless dogs and association between Ancylostoma and T. canis (0.5%), Ancylostoma and Isospora spp (0.8%), Ancylostoma and D. caninum (0.3%), Ancylostoma, T. canis and Isospora spp (0.3%), Ancylostoma and C. parvum (0.3%), T. canis and Isospora spp (0.3%) in domiciliated dogs. When sex was taken into consideration, it was found that 14.93% and 15.19% of positive samples were from male and female dogs respectively. In regards to age, 38.35% of parasitized dogs had less than one year of age; 27.39% were between one and three years of age and 34.24% were older than three years.
