Resumo
This study was conducted to detect antibodies to
BHV-1 in cattle sera from some counties from State of Goiás,
Brazil. Seven hundred and ninety (790) bovine serum
samples were tested through a commercial enzyme
immunosorbant assay (ELISA). The samples were in the
majority (75.3%) from cattle with clinical signs associated
to reproductive problems. The sera were collected from 90
properties including dairy, beef and mixed herds, distributed
in 40 counties of Goiás. The positiveness rate for BHV-1
was 83.0%. Dairy cattle showed a higher rate than beef
cattle (p<0.01). Within the properties included in this study,
96.7% presented positive animals and 97.5% of the counties
presented at least one positive animal. Paired sera were
obtained from 420 samples and they were also tested by
serum neutralization test (SN) with one hour of virus-serum
incubation period. Only 7.8% (n=33) of the samples showed
seroconvertion, indicating acute infection. The samples that
showed discrepant results between the ELISA and SN (n=46),
were retested by SN using different virus-serum incubation
periods. There was an increasing in the detection of positive
samples while the incubation virus–serum increase. These
results demonstrated that BHV-1 is circulating in the State
of Goiás and suggests that a 24 hours virus incubation period
must be used in the serum neutralization test for BHV-1
diagnosis.
