Resumo

The study carried out aimed to use the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the school environment, more precisely in an English classroom, in order to make it possible for a group of students from the Brazilian 8th grade to use language as a tool for reflection in the construction of the meaning of two different texts genres. The methodology used was qualitative research, more precisely, a case study. This study aims at: 1) comprehending the negotiation process of the texts used in the English class, emphasizing the reading process in English and the reading strategies such as a) prediction of the subject; b) previous knowledge; c) contextual guessing; d) cognates, among others, and 2) finding out what difficulties the students from Youth and Adult Education would have concerning a computer and the use of the internet. This study has used theorizations of scholars, which focus on reading in their mother-tongue and foreign languages, such as: Kock and Travaglia (2000), Leffa (1996), Nutall (1996), Dias (1996) and Solé (1998), Marcuschi (2007), Bakhtin (2006, 2011, 2013), Ramos et al (2009), Lankshear and Knobel (2006) and Oliveira (2013). The results show that the students can understand the general idea of the texts.
