Acidentes com material biológico entre estudantes de odontologia no estado de Goiás e o papel das instituições de ensino

This is an epidemiological, retrospective and descriptive study which the objective was to evaluate the frequency and profile of accidents with biological material among dental students attending a reference hospital and to characterize the pre-and post-exposure behavior and monitoring program recommended for this group. Data collection was conducted from October 2010 to April 2011. Records of the accidents with biological material between dental students attended since the first record of an accident until December 2010. Of the 701 accidents between the dental team assisted, 141 (20.1%) occurred among students, and observed the first record in 2000. Most accidents occurred in Goiânia (134, 95.0%). A percutaneous exposure (133, 95.1%) was the most frequent and lumen needle the object more involved in these accidents (51, 38.1%). Adherence to hepatitis B vaccine and to the clinical-laboratory was considered low. Establishing protocols for occupational accidents, made by the educational institution, and that in addition to notification, prioritize the monitoring and progress of each case, could contribute to greater adherence to post-exposure behaviors among this population.
