Entre tombamentos: um estudo sobre o Centro Histórico de Cuiabá e a construção da paisagem na Rua 13 de Junho

Abstract

This research aims to understand the process of formation of Rua 13 de Junho, or the popular “port path,” in order to attest to the reasons for its current form and to show the reminiscences that reveal its age and significance. The basis for demonstrating its documentary value is, therefore, reinforced by its geographic location – that of a direct route between the two axes of growth of Cuiabá –, in addition to the character it assumes by including, in part, surrounding sectors, enabling the chain of historical facts. The study brings to light the possible consequences that the late listing of the old part of the city may have caused for the current appearance of the road which, given the significant architectural loss of character, has compromised the identification of historical layers. The research uses methodological procedures guided by qualitative and descriptive potential, whose set of instruments involves historical review and survey of the area. In this way, the most significant urban transformations that impact the landscape are considered at first. Attention is given to the loss of urban references and to the remaining elements inserted in the socio-spatial context. In addition to these observations, the understanding of how the preservation perspective dialogues with the instruments of urban planning, considering the articulation between new and old, is also sought. A major ambition of the research is to contribute to the understanding of what this landscape communicates to us, confronting past forms and changing functions. Finally, the work addresses the aspects that qualify the street and that favor (or not) its valorization, through formal permanences and/or activities that reinforce the dynamism of the old area for the context of the city.
