Resumo
: Cognitive impairment (CI) is recognized as a prevalent and disabling symptom in
Multiple Sclerosis (MS), compromising activities of daily living (ADLs), employability, social life
and adherence to treatment, sometimes more intensely than physical limitations themselves.
Objectives: This study aimed is describe the spectrum and prevalence of CI phenotypes in MS in
patients from a referral center in the city of Goiânia, potential risk factors and how they may be
related to the evolution of the disease. Methods: A sample of 117 people with MS (PwMS) from a
university reference center was selected, diagnosed according to McDonald’s revised criteria and
evaluated cognitively, psychologically and functionally with the following instruments: Brief
Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests in Multiple Sclerosis (BRB-N), Beck Depression
Inventory- 2ª edition (BDI-II), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Expanded Disability Status Scale
(EDSS). Results: We found CI in 60.7% of the sample, with 25.6% classified as mild and 35.1%
severe, of which 17.1% met criteria for dementia. Conclusions: MS generates mild cognitive
impairment (MCI) in patients and can increase the possibility of dementia with MS dementia being
specific and associated with the motor severity of the disease.
