dc.description.abstractBorn at the beginning of the twentieth century, Pentecostalism has grown largely in Brazil, especially in recent decades. The city of Imperatriz, located in the southwestern state of Maranhão, is an example of how this form of religiosity is expanding. In this work, the Assembly of God is studied by stand out as the largest Protestant denomination, which has the second largest temple in this protestant denomination in Latin America and over a hundred and thirty-affiliated churches in the urban and rural. Its growth coincided with urban sprawl, economic and demographic of the city, especially from the 1970s. In this context the inclusion of Protestantism in the Brazilian backwoods, the institution started a large project of religious proselytism, competing with Roman Catholicism and engendering a religious identity Pentecostal fundamentalist content. Therefore, we seek to understand their origins, dissemination strategies and characteristics of their identity and their relationship to otherness (Catholicism and Whitsun) and the political field as well as scan their world view with regard to social and cultural issues, still problematic to the Pentecostals, such as secularism, abortion, atheism, among others. To this end, it is the approach of Cultural Studies and New Cultural History, which takes advantage to understand the symbolic exchanges occurring within it along its trajectory and the posture of denial of the secular culture. We can see that the institution has an ambiguous relationship to modernity, rejects their values, but uses its technological achievements to expand. Moreover, changes inside its history and its interaction with the events that reflect the changes that took place in Brazilian history have caused large changes in various postures adopted by his leadership, the decision to insert themselves in the media in order to compete with rival Pentecostal, the adoption of the Gospel of Health and Prosperity and closer ties with the political field, which brought many benefits in the social and religious fieldseng

dc.description.resumoSurgido no início do século XX, o pentecostalismo tem crescido vertiginosamente em todo o Brasil, sobretudo nas últimas décadas. A cidade de Imperatriz, localizada no sudoeste do Estado do Maranhão, é um exemplo de como essa forma de religiosidade vem se expandindo. Neste trabalho, a Assembleia de Deus é estudada por destacar-se como a maior denominação protestante, possuindo o segundo maior templo dessa vertente na América Latina e mais de cento e trinta igrejas afiliadas na zona urbana e rural. Seu crescimento coincidiu com a expansão urbana, econômica e demográfica da cidade, precipuamente a partir da década de 1970. Nesse contexto de inserção do protestantismo no sertão brasileiro, essa instituição emplacou um amplo projeto de proselitismo religioso, rivalizando com o catolicismo romano e engendrando uma identidade religiosa pentecostal de teor fundamentalista. Por esse motivo, busca-se compreender suas origens, estratégias de difusão e as características dessa identidade, bem como sua relação com a alteridade (catolicismo e neopentecostalismo) e com o campo político, e também esquadrinhar sua visão de mundo no tocante a questões sócioculturais, ainda caros aos pentecostais, como secularismo, aborto, ateísmo, entre outros. Para tanto, vale-se da abordagem dos Estudos Culturais e da Nova História Cultural Francesa, o que oportuniza compreender as trocas simbólicas ocorridas em seu interior ao longo de sua trajetória e uma postura de denegação da cultura profana e secular. Percebe-se que a instituição tem uma relação ambígua com a modernidade: rejeita seus valores, mas utiliza suas conquistas tecnológicas para expandir-se. Por outro lado, as mudanças ocorridas em seu interior ao longo de sua história e sua interação com os acontecimentos que traduzem as transformações que aconteceram na história brasileira ocasionaram fortes alterações em várias posturas adotadas por sua liderança, como a decisão de inserir-se nos meios de comunicação a fim de concorrer com as rivais neopentecostais, a adoção da Teologia da Prosperidade e o estreitamento de laços com o campo político, o que lhe trouxe diversos benefícios na esfera social e religiosapor
