Resumo
The pilgrimage of Santa Lucia is a Catholic manifestation held in the city of
Porangatu since 2002. The community of Santa Luzia, responsible for organizing the
party in honor of its patron saint, is one of the rural communities belonging to
religious territory of the local Catholic Church. This study aims to understand how the
pilgrimage of Santa Luzia, in their rituals and symbolism, contribute with formation of
a territorial identity in the community that materializes. Religious territories of the
Catholic Church are territorial delineations in which the clergy manages the religious
services of the Catholic faith and to promote a religious identity in that territory. In
terms of methodological procedures initially was devoted to literature review, to be
used for journal articles, beyond texts published in conference proceedings, books,
and Graduation texts. The documentary research also showed the deep need in the
logical ordering of elements and facts. The field work was carried out through an
ethnogeography associated with participatory research, with semi-structured
interviews and questionnaires, also relying on oral history. Even though, the
pilgrimage of Santa Luzia it was designed by an outsider to the community, has
always been held by farmers in the community. As an invented tradition, this festival
is already considered a heritage of the local community, responsible for generating
feelings of belonging both for the party, as the territory of the community, where
celebrate the celebration. It was possible to apprehend that the symbolic disputes for
festive territory of the pilgrimage, the community of Santa Luzia seeks to impose their
sense of party, trying to protect it from unholy practices, such as dances and
drunkenness. It also highlights the fact that territorial identities in the community, built
on a symbolic territory that sums up the collective memory of the group, are in
Catholic territories its conformation. It became clear that the devoted prayers to the
saints of each community family are important forms of sociability in the community
and contribute to the formation of territorial identity in the locality. The celebration of
Santa Lucia is responsible for articulating a set of symbolic elements that participated
in the community's social construction. To be held every year, the religious
celebration revives the past of the community and connects it to the present, in
addition to making the best known community. Thus, three elements have been
identified to contribute significantly to territorial identity in the community of Santa
Luzia: institutionalized Catholic territories, prayers and pilgrimage.
