Patrimônio em disputa: estudo de caso do antigo Grande Hotel em Goiânia-GO

Abstract

This dissertation investigates the challenges faced by managers and institutions in preserving the former Grande Hotel de Goiânia as a cultural heritage asset, highlighting its significance as a space of memory in the city’s history. Designated as a heritage site at the municipal, state, and federal levels, the building has become a landmark in the official narrative of modernity and progress associated with the construction of Goiânia. However, such recognition did not translate into effective protection, resulting in conflicts among the responsible institutions and in uses that often undermined its historical and symbolic value. The research adopted a case study methodology, articulated through the triangulation of sources, combining documentary survey, bibliographic review, and the analysis of records from the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), press articles, and academic works. This approach made it possible to examine the Grande Hotel in its uniqueness and in the multiple dimensions of its trajectory, valuing different perspectives on its patrimonialization. The findings reveal that the trajectory of the Grande Hotel exposes tensions inherent in the field of heritage: the gap between legal recognition and material preservation; the dispute over meanings attributed to the cultural asset; and the difficulty of reconciling political, social, and economic interests in the management process. The case of the Grande Hotel exemplifies the contradictions of heritage policies in Brazil while reinforcing the importance of approaches that integrate memory, identity, and social participation in the safeguarding of cultural assets.
