Resumo

Concepts building depends on assimilative characteristics of mental structures built by individuals during their lives. Mental structures able to build concepts uniquely by means of their verbal expression occur, according to Piaget, only in the stage of formal opperations, which begins approximately at the eleventh year of life. Nevertheless, schools in Brazil, using mainly language signs in their activity, intend to transmit those concepts in the four former series of fundamental teaching to 7-11 years old children. This leads children do assimilate signs in a concrete form instead of the concepts they refer to. A study conducted in Goiânia-Goiás-Brazil with students of first grade schools offers evidences of that fact in what it’s regarded to concepts learning of decimal numbering system.
