Resumo
This paper is developed as a bibliographical research and aims to discuss the relationship
between children's literature and education. Many times, when literature is mentioned at school,
people think of it as a tool to help the apprehension of contents related to the Portuguese
language or as a way to teach moral codes. This paper intends to reflect on literature as an artistic
expression and how it can be offered to students at school, respecting this vision. The first
chapter discusses, based on the contributions of Ariès (1986), childhood as we know it today and,
with Lajolo and Zilberman (2007), they reflect on the emergence of literature aimed at children.

literature aimed at children. In this perspective, how it was created to work as a product to be
consumed by them, as well as an instrument of moralization until it became a specific literary
genre. The second chapter discusses, based on Valdez (2018), the possibilities and potentialities
of literature in children's lives, presenting the book in a pleasurable and meaningful way. Also
discussed, following articles by Martins and Souza (2015), Sousa (2016), Barbosa, Formiga and
Inácio (2015) and Anjos and Vieira (2015), the necessary adjustments and pedagogical practices
to effectively work literature in the classroom, presenting to the students this art form in the best
possible way, since for many children, the contact with literature happens in a more meaningful
way at school.
